Honoring Nature’s Bounty: Crafting a Stunning Biological Food Film
Mother Nature is awesome!
Over millions of years, SHE has shaped us along with all living things on our beautiful Blue Marble, the name given to our planet by the astronauts of the Apollo 17 mission when the famous picture was taken.
We share our DNA with all living things; we complement each other and need each other to coexist. This, of course, includes the food we consume, especially the food we consume!
In the end, we are what we eat.
In a society shaped by us and our inventions to preserve or process food for convenience and taste, we've lost sight of the fact that the good stuff has always been there for us since the beginning of time.
Here at Chuck Studios, we are very sensitive about matters related to the environment and healthy habits, especially concerning what we put on our tables. This is why, when the Dutch Government contacted us for their campaign to promote more aware purchasing and consumption choices during grocery shopping, we resonated instantly with the purpose of this tabletop film.
The request was clear: depict biological food in all its beauty and glory.
Beauty and glory—two words that are prominent in the dictionary of our Director, Natascha Brandt. Her keen eye for everything that expresses beauty and her ability to elevate every composition artistically in her shots were the perfect ingredients for a successful production.
Time was not on our side, which made everything quite challenging. No fakes—only real, gorgeous, biological food that our food stylists Vince and Grace had to source, select, and prepare with utmost care, finding brilliant solutions to make it perfect!
Seven prep days and one shooting day of 13 long hours saw our trusted and amazing crew give it their all, including a DoP we had never worked with before, Giuseppe Bonasia, who traveled from Milan, Italy, to join the team.
Our cameras were working under pressure with all the slow motions and dynamic shots Natascha designed. Our Phantom Flex 4k was flexing its ability to shoot at high frame rates, almost freezing every little detail in time, while our Arri Alexa captured the smallest nuances in the colors of our heroes.
For Natascha, it was also the first time directing a four-year-old kid who had to eat spaghetti and tomato sauce at 9 in the morning—what a perfect breakfast!
After the shooting, the post-production began. All footage was put in the expert hands of our editor Tom and grader Tristen. With a little help from the grand wizard Efraim retouching the important details, we delivered an epic tabletop food film.
The end result? Let’s just say it made the client really happy and impressed by how we managed everything in detail within the limited time we had.
We really enjoyed working for the oldest stars in our food chain, so relevant, so gorgeous, so delicious even after millions of years. We hope to have more opportunities like this in the future, working hard and having fun while doing something important for our little Blue Marble.
